About Michael Good:

Michael Good has developed and expanded the anticlastic technique so much that his name has become synonymous with anticlastic raising. In the words of jewelry writer Ettagale Blauer, "Tucked away in beautiful and secluded pockets of the vast American landscape are goldsmiths whose work rivals the best the world has known. Pre-eminent among them is Michael Good, a goldsmith whose use of what he calls the anticlastic process has forced the commercial jewelry world to expand its definitions and ideas about how American jewelry should look and how it can be made."

Born in Pittsburgh, PA and raised in both the US and Europe, while working as a social activist in NYC in the 1960's Michael learned some rudimentary metalsmithing skills from a sculptor.  Largely self-taught and augmenting his skills through workshops, in 1969, he moved with his family to a small town in northeast Maine, where he spent several years doing all sorts of odd jobs while continuing to work on his jewelry. In 1977 Michael took a workshop with Finnish metalsmith Heikki Seppa, who introduced him to the fundamental techniques of making compound curves in sheet metal.  Fascinated with the process, Michael dedicated his attention to pushing the techniques further.  By 1981-1986, his work had advanced to the level of his winning several prestigious awards, including Intergold, Diamonds Today, and Diamonds International, laying the foundations for a long career designing jewelry and sculpture using anticlastic raising techniques.

Today Michael is a member of the American Jewelry Design Council, Gruppe ASPECTS, the Society of North American Goldsmiths, the Manufacturing Jewelers and Silversmiths of America, the Maine Crafts Association, among others and is a prolific workshop teacher. His work is found in a limited number of elite galleries, as well as his own gallery in Rockland, Maine.

March 2025 Meet Up

College for Creative Studies

Sunday, March 9, 2025
1:00-3:00PM

Our March 2025 meet up will be held at, College for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit, MI on Sunday, March 9, from 1:00-3:00. For those of you who have attended our MSG annual meetings or any number of MSG workshops, the venue will be quite familiar. For those who have not, the CCS campus has 2 sites; the Art Center Building is located on the Ford Campus, located at 201 E. Kirby.  The Jewelry Studio, in the Kresge-Ford Building, room 211 is located on the 2nd floor and is equipped with almost every tool a jeweler could want; our brief tour will whet your appetite to try new techniques! As per our usual agenda, the Meet-Up will cover brief introductions, a short tour of the jewelry studio, and time for networking and sharing:

  • Show off new creations; tell us how it was made

  • Share what we’re working on - successes/challenges/frustrations

  • Get feedback from fellow metalsmiths

  • Discuss new techniques, resources and upcoming events

Note: There is free parking at the parking garage on Brush St., one block north of Frederick Douglas. Brush St. is one-way and can best be accessed from either Warren or Frederick Douglas. Simply tell the attendant on duty that you are participating in a meeting. From there, it is a quick stroll across the campus.

This is a great opportunity to meet like-minded metals aficionados, explore another teaching studio, to see familiar faces and meet new friends, so grab a friend or two and stop on by.

Light snacks will be provided, and you are also welcome to bring your own snacks.

Plans are in the works to have our May Meet Up in Traverse City, MI; look forward to more information on that meeting in April. Also, we are always looking for venues throughout the state, and we welcome your suggestions. Please let us know if you have any ideas.
