Along with our lecture we will have a tool swap, snacks and an open all membership meeting to vote for officers board members and discuss the years activities. This event is free and open to the public.Biography:Caroline Gore received a Master of Fine Arts in 2001 from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts, in 1998 from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. While maintaining an active studio practice, she also lectures internationally on her work and the metals/jewelry field. She was invited to work as an artist in residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, Nebraska in 2008, and also in Finland at The Artisans, Designers, and Artists Cooperative of Fiskars, in the village of Fiskars in 2007. Her work has been the included in numerous books, for example, 500 Pendants and Lockets: Contemporary Interpretations of Classic Adornments, and Like, An Experiment in Interpretation, by New Zealand jeweler and curator Stella Chrysostomou. Currently she is an Assistant Professor of Art and Area Coordinator for Metals/Jewelry at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Her work is represented by Ornamentum Gallery in Hudson New York and Quirk Gallery in Richmond Virginia. Topic:As a culture we suffer when we do not see the beauty of what lies around us in the everyday, and the overload of information and technology pulls us further and further away from being able to see our surroundings clearly. By simply highlighting what often goes unnoticed in environments, my work offers a solution to the single-focused attention of our dramatically busy lives. A dialogue between art and the lives of everyday people is formed when the work is placed in the public space, often in the street and in urban environments. In my working practice, I use this concept in response to inattentional blindness – the forces and attitudes that so often prevent us from seeing our everyday habitat. The site-specific work becomes a gift to those who happen to notice it.Since 2006 I have been translating chosen environments into site-specific interventions. These interventions consist in applying gold leaf to various spaces around cities, creating my own composition of what I find beautiful in the mundane and overlooked. After my travels, I return to the studio and make a souvenir of the intervention in jewelry. Not every space or place is right for this work, and it takes a long time to completely settle on the correct environment. There has to be a pull, and it must be right; this differentiates the intervention from simple graffiti.

MSG Workshop: Fancy Filigree in the 21st Century with Stacey Lee Webber May 16-17

February 24, 2009 by Christine Bossler

Workshop Description:Fancy Filigree in the 21st Century is a hot, modern take on the historic technique of filigree. Filigree meaning "wire work" is the process of twisting wire, usually silver or gold, to make small shapes which are soldered together to traditionally form rich ornamentation. Because filigree is a time intensive technique with low material costs it is often found in parts of the world where labor is cheap such as India, Mexico, and Iraq. The filigree workshop will teach a contemporary version of filigree while making note of the techniques' historic roots. The workshop participants will be charged to make objects which question the value of the labor in their craft.Biography:Stacey Lee Webber is a graduate of Ball State University, born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. She has recently received her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Metals under Lisa Gralnick and Kim Cridler. She is a fresh, new face in the metals field with goals and visions of breaching metalsmithing with the contemporary art world. She has received numerous university grants to travel to New York, New Jersey and to study abroad in Italy. Stacey Lee is currently living in Chicago developing a small line of jewelry while showing sculpture in galleries such as the Allan Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia and Velvet da Vinci in San Francisco.

Call for Entry: Co:Operation Tableware

July 29, 2010 by Christine Bossler

An exhibition featuring work by pairs of artists who cooperatively create a set of tableware, functional or nonfunctional. To be exhibited at Fancy Gallery, Seattle during the SNAG conference 2011. Premise: Eating requires the systematic use of a variety of serving tools from flatware to dinnerware to serveware. Many functional serving elements combine each time we sit down to enjoy a meal. A cup and a saucer, a knife and a fork, a soup bowl and a spoon, diverse items work hand in hand at the breakfast or dinner table. Can two artists create cooperatively too? Can two artists who typically work in different media create a set of objects that when combined allow for a meaningful function at the table? This exhibition would like to show how two individual makers develop a tableware set together. These objects can work together, respond to one another, converse between each other, or work dependently with one another. We are looking for work that has been developed by artists from a variety of craft backgrounds. The goal of the exhibition is to show where the influence of each individual artist ends, and FLOWS into the creative sphere of the team, thus picking up on the SNAG conference theme FLUX, Flux as a Process. The end result will be an exhibition of items or sets on which both artists worked cooperatively, and that complement each other in their function examples include: ladle and gravy bowl, fork and knife, pots and pans, cup and saucer, etc. or one piece on which both artists worked cooperatively bowl, pepper mill, plate etc. This is a jured exhibition, applications are due November 5th.

Call for Images: Humor in Craft

July 29, 2010 by Christine Bossler

Whats so funny? People of all ages and cultures respond to humor enthusiastically and craft artwork definitely can be very funny! Often, the work exudes a sense of the absurd due to exaggerated size or by being executed in unusual materials. Craft artwork can be highly ironic, political, sarcastic, or just plain amusing, and it comes in a variety of media, such as metals, wood, fibers, ceramics, glass, mixed media etc. Brigitte Martin has joined up with Schiffer Publishing to develop a book about the role humor plays in contemporary craft, and we welcome your submissions in image and text! We are looking for the following contributions: images of humorous artwork, texts and essays by the contributing artists, commenting about humorous aspects in their artwork, essays by writers about the role of humor and fun in craft. Can you show us humor in all its shades expressed through craft artwork and text? Who decides what is funny and what is not? What topics are offlimits? Is irony funny? Sarcasm? Are politics funny? Religion? This book aims to provide the viewer with entertainment, commentary, and of course, many fine craft pieces by makers from all over the world. Humor has no borders. Or does it? It might be interesting to learn how a piece will be hilarious in China, but only garner mild astonishment in Sweden and vice versa. This call is open to craft artists working in all craft media. International entries are particularly welcome and encouraged! The book is scheduled to be on the market in 2012. This is a rolling call: THE SOONER YOU SEND IN YOUR ENTRY the greater your chance to be considered!

Call for Related Work - 2010 Exhibition in Print: "Neo-Palatial: Objects of Virtue and Vice," curated by Garth Clark.

February 23, 2010 by Christine Bossler

Throughout history, metalsmiths have sought commissions from the palace to create objet de virtue, extravagant works that challenge the limitation of technique, scale, and sometimes even good taste. Such objects are designed to take center stage, serving as the focal point of parlors, entrance halls, courtyards, or, later in the 19th-century, as “exposition vases” at World Fairs. They were a little brash, deliberately exaggerated, and virtuosic or at least rapturous in their use of metals, lest they disappoint their patrons and noble guests. Over time, these patrons have changed from princes and warlords, to collectors and museums. For the 2010 “Exhibition in Print,” published by Metalsmith magazine, guest curator Garth Clark is seeking examples of giant “exposition vases,” canonical candlesticks, and jewelry on steroids, in an exploration of the brilliance and decadence of this metalsmithing genre. For consideration, please send Web links or no more than three image files to garthclark@me.com. Deadline for submission, March 15, 2010.

Call for Entry: SIRRIAD New Traditional Jewellery "True Colours"

February 11, 2010 by Christine Bossler

For the design contest and exhibition 2010, the technical jury of New Traditional Jewellery has chosen the theme True Colours, because literally as well as figuratively this theme offers considerable scope for inspiration.True Colours may be approached from a social perspective, society if full of topical colour coding. Other examples may be found in heraldry, folklore and science. True Colours refers to colours and pigments. Over the centuries the palette of art history has been determined by precious mineralogical and biological pigments that were obtained from ground semiprecious stones, processed metals, and earth, seeds and plants materials that did not always bear the test of time; in the course of time white lead, e.g. turned black. The link between the theme True Colours and contemporary jewellery design is obvious. From time immemorial the significance and appreciation of jewellery have been determined by colour, among other things. From the use of gold or silver to enamels and mineralogical and biological stones: colour is a language. In the seventies and eighties it became manifest how rich this language is. The application of textiles and Perspex in jewellery led to a new form language and use of colour – an important stage in the emancipation of contemporary jewellery design. True Colours is about the history, meaning, value, magic and power of the language of colour Colour says something about status and social strata. Colour can scream, curse, emancipate, help, condemn and segregate. Colour is a statement. Due June 1, 2010.

Call for Entry: A Presence of Thought SNAG Annual Juried Student Digital Presentation

October 12, 2009 by Christine Bossler

How many times have we seen images of jewelry, objects, or installations and wondered: “How does it look on the body?” or “How does this object relate to an environment?” or “Is that the ideal space for this installation?” Work is often documented against a neutral backdrop. Without context, vital information maybe lost; for example, a ring on a hand provides a different experience for the audience. For this digital presentation, to be shown on screen during the 2010 Conference, artists should submit representative images of artwork in the context of its intended use/environment as well as utilizing a typical formal backdrop. Students from across the country are challenged to experiment with the many possibilities of presenting their artwork to the field and beyond – making the audience laugh, ponder, or possibly shed a tear.

Call for Entry: I Care A Lot

October 12, 2009 by Christine Bossler

I Care A Lot - a portable discussion on the Middle East present a collection of Jewelry artworks in a group exhibition dealing with a verity of complicated themes associated with the Middle East. Why jewelry? Jewelry is an intimate art medium within the private and the public space which offers a personal relationship and an encounter between the wearer ,the viewer audience and the actual jewelry. It is an invitation to start a conversation and it can make a meeting possible. The body is a portable show case and the wearer chooses what and how to exhibit on him/her. Jewelry express the wearer character and sense of humor, it acts as an extension to the wearer personality, indicating his/her group of belonging, it is asking questions or claiming its opinion about the reality in which we live in, about our society, our surrounding and ourselves. By wearing jewelries we attain communication. Cause we care. The region’s history and present are seeded with continuous violent national, ethnic and other conflicts. In many aspects the Middle East is considered to be one of the most sensitive and unstable regions in the world; strategically, economically, politically, culturally and religiously. It is located in the center of the international politics agenda. Its historical role, its huge reserves of crud oil and its significance for the three largest monotheist religions are usually taken as reasons for the world’s ardent interest in the region. But the attitude towards the Middle East has pasted the point of a keen interest in world affairs. By now it seems clear that the Middle East is perceived, especially by consumers of Western media, as the place where world dramas converge, or - more accurately - collide. It is almost the opposite of the Bermuda Triangle: everything that happens there pops up on our radars. What is the Middle East? What is the source of our attraction to it? Is it just that it happens to be the most eventful place on earth? What is the nature of our commitment to effecting the future of the region? Do we really care about what goes on there? Do we really care about what goes on anywhere that is elsewhere? Do we care about the Middle East in a way similar to the way we care about how people look at us? Do we care about it the way we care about what people see in us? What are we looking for? The work should have an unexpected creative concept. The jewelry pieces can express a belief, a wish, it can be a trigger to start a discussion, raising questions, showing your opinions, a teaser, a protest or what ever you find relevant to the topic.

Call for Entry: True Colours - New Traditional Jewellery

October 12, 2009 by Christine Bossler

Showing your true colours means that you show what your real attitudes and qualities are. You can approach True Colours from a social perspective; society is full of topical colour coding. Other examples may be found in heraldry, folklore and science. True Colours refers to colours and pigments. Over the centuries the palette of art history has been determined by precious mineralogical and biological pigments that were obtained from ground semi-precious stones, processed metals, and earth, seeds and plants – materials that did not always bear the test of time; in the course of time white lead e.g. turned black. The link between the theme ‘True Colours’ and contemporary jewellery design is obvious. From time immemorial the significance and appreciation of jewellery have pre-eminently been determined by colour. True Colours is about the history, meaning, value, magic and power of the language of colour. - Entries for ‘True Colours’, New Traditional Jewellery 2010 must be wearable. Installations and objects that do not logically tie in with the body are outside the scope of this contest.- Entries must be inspired by a historical or traditional piece of jewellery. The source of inspiration should be made known and illustrated by means of a photo, and the translation into a new ornament be explained.- Entries should add a new chapter to an old story. The conditions for this design contest (new shapes evolving out of existing, threatened and/or lost traditions) do not imply a figuration. On the contrary. The jury wants to emphasize that the inspiration, and not the design per se, should be based on a past.

Toledo Museum of Art collects Disk and Pendant Earring with Eagle Grasping Thunderbolt

October 12, 2009 by Christine Bossler

The eagle is an attribute of, or sometimes a representation of, Zeus, king of the gods. The eagle’s body, wings, feet, and thunderbolts are masterfully sculpted of gold sheet and filigree; the body is completely covered with minute granules of gold. The tiny granules were made by shaving gold into a bed of charcoal dust. When heated, the shavings fused into perfect solid spheres. Miniature sculptures of birds and mythological flying creatures were popular pendants for women’s earrings. Though monumental in presence, this earring is only 1˝ inches tall. Gold, repoussé, filigree, chain, granulation, about 220–130 B.C. Purchased with funds from the Libbey Endowment, Gift of Edward Drummond Libbey, 2007.10

Sense of self, place and eerie whim pervade works by Iris Eichenberg

August 23, 2009 by Christine Bossler

Something unsettling and melancholy suffuses the work of Iris Eichenberg, an artist of the small and remarkable. A one-time nurse who veered into art and now heads the metalsmithing department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Eichenberg works mostly in esoteric jewelry, pieces of which have been acquired by institutions from New York's Metropolitan Museum to Paris' National Fondation D'Art Contemporain. The body is central to much of what this German-born artist creates, perhaps not surprising given her background.

Call for Entry: Sieraad New Traditional Jewellery

July 12, 2009 by Christine Bossler

The 2010 theme: 'True Colours'Showing your true colours means that you show what your real attitudes and qualities are. You can approach True Colours from a social perspective; society is full of topical colour coding. Other examples may be found in heraldry, folklore and science.True Colours refers to colours and pigments. From the use of gold or silver to enamels and mineralogical and biological stones: colour is a language. In the seventies and eighties it became manifest how rich this language is. The application of textiles and Perspex in jewellery led to a new form language and use of colour – an important stage in the emancipation of contemporary jewellery design.True Colours is about the history, meaning, value, magic and power of the language of colour.Fully completed registration form by email before 1 June 2010

Call for Entry: eXtreme Tea Exhibition

July 12, 2009 by Christine Bossler

An exhibition of historic and contemporary tea infusers and strainers, curated by Tom Muir. The exhibit will be shown from January 16 – March 21, 2010 at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. eXtreme Tea will be on display during the 2010 SNAG Conference, "Going to Extremes," Houston, TX, March 10-13, 2010Introduction: If you’ve used a teabag, you’ve used the least attractive, and most common, form of contemporary tea infuser. A tea infuser is simply a device that holds loose tea leaves for brewing in a pot or cup. But this simple, useful object has a history of extraordinary artistic elaboration, in common with all tea implements. Today, as tea is a popular beverage around the globe, the tea infuser presents an exciting challenge for contemporary artists in many media. The contrasts between tradition and contemporary possibilities for the tea infuser are extreme indeed – even more so is the inventiveness that takes this simple function to imaginative extremes! High craft and low craft are contrastingly represented in tea infusers, which can be made of metal, glass, ceramic, fiber and plastic – and combinations of mixed media. The functional solution that artists have found to the problem of steeping tea have varied widely and wildly – from figural, thematic depictions and literary references to visual and functional puns and engineering tours de forces. With possibilities for multiple use in the contemporary context, tea infusers provide unlimited possibilities for artists! Besides the popularity of tea itself, new forms of contemporary tea infusers will also share in the world-wide status of teapots as culturally significant artforms. To have work considered for the exhibition, please send high-quality digital images and information to:Tom MuirFine Arts CenterBowling Green State UniversityBowling Green, OH 43402or tommuir@hughes.netDeadline for submission: October 1, 2009

Call for Presentation Proposals: 2011 SNAG Conference

July 12, 2009 by Christine Bossler

flux (fluks), n. 1. a flowing or flow. 2. continuous change, passage, or movement. 3. a substance used to remove oxides from and prevent further oxidation of fused metal. As human beings, we live in a state of flux, personally and globally. We move with the constant flow of life, events, information, ideas, materials, and technologies that surround us. There is movement in art, culture, society, politics, economics, science, etc. We deal with change or ignore it; embrace it or refute it; influence it or make a truce with it. Flux is a constant catalyst in our lives. How are the metal arts-and the people making, promoting, analyzing, buying, and preserving them-affected by change? What do we contribute to it? What effect does being in a state of flux have on how and what we choose to make, to teach, and to value? What effect does it have on whether the art is made using traditional techniques or cutting-edge technology? Is composed of long-lived or ephemeral materials? Embodies a conceptual or representational approach? Is on a wearable or public-art scale? Being in flux can be unsettling or it can be invigorating. How then do we tap into the positive aspects of being in flux, the positive aspects of flow? In what ways is that flow a part of our work? Is it intrinsic to the design? Do we incorporate it in the process? And how do we get our minds and our work into that flow, to that in-the-groove state of mind? To recommend a presenter: If you have seen an excellent presentation that would contribute to this dialogue, please tell us about it and why you think it should be considered. Contact both Carmen Valdes and Joan Hammond. All emailed proposals must be received by, and mailed proposals must be postmarked by: August 15, 2009. Conventions and formats for submittals: § CDs and DVDs should be labeled with the presenter's name. § For files submitted on a CD, the files should be in a single folder with the presenter's name as the folder name. § Name each .pdf file with the presenter's last name and first initial, and a word describing the contents (for example, DOE_J_Resume.pdf).§ Images should be in JPEG format, 1000 pixels on the longest dimension. Call for Entry: Home: Loving It, Losing It, Leaving It

February 5, 2009 by Christine Bossler

Having a house and home is part of the American dream. Currently, more people are losing their homes than any other time since the Great Depression, and Michigan has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country. Add to this the crises of homelessness and natural disasters that sweep away whole communities, and we see a population in distress. For migrant communities, often less visible and sometimes here illegally, moving from one temporary space to another takes a continuous toll. Yet we are a nation of immigrants who never give up the urge and the courage to move on.What does it mean to families, children, women and men to lose their physical surroundings? What are the emotional consequences of being cut adrift? Home is often considered the “woman’s domain”. What does it feel like to lose that center of control, often a woman’s work of a lifetime? Is there a freedom in leaving everything behind? This exhibit is as much about the home space as it is about packing up and moving on. With this in mind, packing (shipping) materials may become part of the installation at the discretion of the gallery committee. Packing materials may be planned as part of the artwork, or not. And yes, it will get messy!Postmarked Deadline March 23, 2009

Griffin received his Masters of Fine Arts degree from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 1974 and was the Academy of Art Metalsmith-in-Residence, leading the Cranbrook Academy of Art’s Metalsmithing Department for 22 years. He has received numerous awards and fellowships including two National Endowment of Arts awards in 1976 and 1977. In 2005, he was elected to the American Craft Council College of Fellows for his contributions and achievements in the field of Metalsmithing. This exhibition will focus on work generated while Griffin was Resident Artist in the John Michael Kohler Art Center’s Art and Industry Program, January through April, 2007. The “Penumbra Series,” which includes 18 ductile cast iron frames explore the moment where molten iron is arrested within a picture plane. This moment of eclipse relies upon chance dictated through material, process and strategic technical decision..Of his work, Griffin states “Whatever intelligence these works may have is generated from sources as diverse as applied engineering, formal aesthetics, material culture study, technological awareness, and the political, social and cultural history of the applied and decorative arts. Over the years, I have sought to add arrows to my quiver and for that reason have sought equilibrium among ideas, concepts, materials and processes..Founded in 1976, the National Ornamental Metal Museum is the only Museum in the Americas dedicated to the preservation and advancement of the art and craft of fine metalwork. Located at 374 Metal Museum Drive, the Museum is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm and Sunday, noon – 5 pm. For more information, call 901-774-6380 or visit www.metalmuseum.org.

NATIONAL METALSMITHS HALL OF FAME AWARD 2007

December 4, 2007 by Juanita Burton-Bitonti

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEThe National Metalsmith's Hall of Fame announces the recipient of the 2007 award is Jean Stark who was honored in the Artist / Arts Educator category.Jean Stark, co-founder of the Kulicke-Stark Academy of Jewelry Arts, is one of the leading practitioners and teachers of granulation and cloisonné enamel, two techniques widely used by Neoclassical jewelers. Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and raised and educated in State College at Penn State University, she majored in art and science with the intention of becoming a medical illustrator. Marriage and a family changed her circumstance and a move to New York allowed her to study painting at the New School and the Brooklyn Museum Art School. Working in a graphic arts studio, she was introduced to ancient jewelry techniques by Robert Kulicke. All of her previous training and experience seemed to coalesce into that disciple and in 1973 they co-founded the Kulicke-Stark Academy of jewelry Arts in New York city. There they researched and redeveloped goldsmithing techniques and aesthetics from ancient civilizations and taught these skills. In 1977, Ms. Stark set up the studio and was the first teacher for the jewelry degree program at Parsons School of Design. Her very popular book, ` Classical Loop-in-Loop Chains and Their Derivatives', which she co-wrote with her sister, Dr. Josephine Reist Smith is now in its third printing.Jean Stark has a large contingent of devoted students among her workshops. The letters of reference for the recommendation referred to Stark as a pre-eminent metalsmith and an enormous influence in the area of granulation. Her passion, guidance, inspiration has encouraged many. The National Metalsmith's Hall of Fame was established in 1999. It is located at The Arts Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. ITAMI International Craft Exhibition

June 10, 2007 by Christine Bossler

The theme of the competition this year is: Jewellery. We have taken up メJewelleryモ as the theme six times since the competition started. With every competition held, the number of the applicants and their works of art has steadily increased and there has been a wider variety of the nationalities of the applicants, which has made us feel appreciative and proud; it seems that this tendency indicates our exhibition has been becoming known. Jewellery must focus on its wearer. Indeed jewellery design changes explicitly and implicitly with the times, but people love jewellery in any time and at any place and jewellery makes its wearers feel happy. In other words, the choice of jewellery is affected by the situation in which the wearers find themselves - even by the cultural backgrounds or by their physical and emotional conditions. We hope all the applicants will turn kind and friendly eyes on people who wear the works.Your artworks have to arrive at our office between August 1 and 11.

Call for Entry: Touching Warms the Art

June 9, 2007 by Christine Bossler

Background The exhibition stems from questions raised by Rebecca Scheer in her exhibition review of “Beyond the Body: Northwest Jewelers at Play” (Metalsmith, Summer 2006, page 53): …imagine if each of the studio jewelers created a non-precious piece for visitors to handle. Could we professionals even achieve such working freedom? Does it devalue what we do? Painstaking craft and hand-worked detail may be the forte of the craft artist. Nevertheless, these values generate preciousness, ultimately dividing the masses from experiencing the pleasures of “real” studio jewelry first-hand. About The Exhibition Touching Warms the Art will be on view January 19 through March 23, 2008. Artwork will be displayed in a non-hierarchical wall display to encourage active visitor participation. An “art bar” stocked with materials based upon those used by participating artists as well as tools will be available for visitors to create their own works.Applications are due August 15th, 2007

Surface Embellishment, Pattern and Inlay Workshop with Idelle Hammond-Sass

December 8, 2006 by Christine Bossler

Create rich surfaces on your jewelry and objects using soldering skills and a rolling mill. Through demonstration and practice we will sweat solder gold sheet, wire and bimetal onto sterling and argentium, and investigate the potential of 18k or 22k bimetal and keum-boo. Inlaid sheet will be made using different metals to create a multicolored patterned metal sheet, or ‘pseudo mokume’. We will develop patterns by soldering various metals and designs to a base sheet and rolling it down. We will work at a fast pace in this one day workshop, doing demos and hands on as time allows. Bio: Idelle Hammond-Sass is a metalsmith and jewelry designer in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Eloquent Expressions: The Art of Damascene.

December 21, 2005 by Christine Bossler

A long cherished secret of the ancient masters, the craft of Damascene, known in the east as Nuname Zogan is thought to have it origins in Kyoto, Japan where it was introduced around 650 BC. Used largely for decoration on firearms, sword guards, jewelry and small objects Damascene production reached its zenith in the 17th century with the production of many objects of recognized cultural significance. The process includes the inlay of precious metals such as gold, silver, and copper into intricate patterned channels cut in the surface of iron goods with various gravers and cold chisels. Today this highly expressive and distinct application of metal on metal decorative work survives in relatively few studio communities outside of its traditional strongholds. This workshop is an attempt to awaken and promote interest, understanding, and appreciation for this centuries old practice. Through two intensive days of study and hands-on exploration students will experience firsthand the challenges and satisfaction of Damascene inlay. At the conclusion of the first day's activities a public lecture and slide presentation will present examples of the splendor of the ancient craft and a survey of contemporary artisans working within this field. The lecture and workshop will be open to the public as well as students from across the Detroit metropolitan community. Day one will introduce participants to the tools and processes specific to this meticulous art form. Through examples, class discussion and demonstrations students will learn the practical method of manufacture and application of traditional chisels and setting tools. Each participant will receive the materials necessary to make their own set of chisels, setting punches, and burnishers. On day two students will use their newly completed tools to execute samples and simple compositions of Damascene ornamental work in gold, fine silver, and copper on mild steel. The workshop experience will conclude with discussion on traditional patination techniques as well as alternative solutions to protective surface and finish requirements. Participants for the workshop will be limited 15 individual. No previous metal working experience is necessary Written by: Tom Madden

Overcoming Obstacles, Winning Top Honor

September 25, 2005 by Christine Bossler

In June, we were excited to once again host the bi-annual Michigan Silversmiths Guild Jewelry + Objects show, a long-time favorite of the Art Center. The show offered examples of technical achievement, opulent beauty and brave vision, specifically in Best of Show winner Erica Duffy’s piece. The winning artwork, Untitled, featured neck-piece composed of sterling silver, mild steel, magnet wire, and electronics. The rods incorporated in the work respond to sound and when worn in performance, create an imprint on the skin marking each sound with their movement, chronicling the artist’s experience in the world as an individual who stutters. Special thanks to Silversmiths Guild members Bill and Kathy Fitzpatrick, who did a terrific job organizing and installing the show, along with Karen Gallup, Christine Bossler and a host of others who were so generous with their time and talents. 3rd Biennial Jewelry & Objects Exhibition comes to an End

June 27, 2005 by Christine Bossler

This years 3rd Biennial Jewelry and Objects Exhibition took place at the Ann Arbor Art Center from May 27th to June 25th. The Juror was Jim Hopfensperger Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Michigan State University. The exhibition featured 97 works by 32 guild members and 18 high school students. The exhibition demonstrated the wide rage of use of the medium from a diverse group of metalsmiths that make-up the membership of our guild. Similar sentiments were expressed by a multitude of viewers at the opening reception. Jim Hofensperger stated “I was impressed with the diversity in scale, material and style of work submitted. It is always a challenge to make these selections. My choices were based on originality, craftsmanship, design and primarily aesthetic appeal.” Images of the award winning pieces are available on our website under MSG Exhibition Gallery (photos from the opening reception are now online as well under MSG Photo Album). Future exhibitions will be documented in full. The Board would like to thank the following for their continuing support of this event: Ann Arbor Art Center, our sponsors (C.R. Hill, Armstrong Tool, G & S Metals, Ken Rose, Eastern Silversmiths Guild, and Northville High School Silversmiths Guild), Jim Hopfensperger, the volunteers for contributing countless number of hours and car miles, and all the members who participated in the exhibition. Sergey Jivetin was awarded the distinguished Herbert Hofmann Award!

June 26, 2005 by Christine Bossler

New York State University artist Sergey Jivetin became one of the few select Americans ever to be awarded the Herbert Hofmann Award, at the "Jewelry 2005" show, which took place within the International Handwerksmesse in Munich, Germany in March 2005. "As honored as I was just to be accepted into this amazing exhibition, to be chosen for the award was just fantastic," says Jivetin. What makes winning this award even more amazing for Sergey is that this was the first time this 27 year old artist's work was shown outside of the United States. Chosen for this exhibition were pieces from Jivetin's "Time Structures" series, a collection of brooches, earrings and rings made from thousands of watch hands. Extremely complex and meticulous in formation, the individual watch hands are lost, as they become part of a vast and mysterious surface of texture and rhythm, creating conflicts between extreme order and chaos, between the decorative whole and the tiny, yet aggressive elements which make it a whole. The show, "Jewelry," founded in 1959 by Herbert Hofmann, is known to artists, gallerists, museum curators and collectors as the most important juried exhibition to take place yearly, regarding modern jewelry design. This years show featured works from 55 designers from 19 countries. From these, only three artists were selected to receive the Hofmann Award, along with Jivetin. The prize was also awarded to Helen Britton (Australia) and Daniel Kruger (South Africa). A separate award, the Bavarian State prize was awarded to Manfred Bischoff (Germany). Sergey Jivetin emigrated to the United States in 1992 from Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He received an MFA at SUNY New Paltz and a BFA at Parsons School of Design, where he also worked as an adjunct professor in the jewelry design department from 2001-2004. Currently, Sergey is focusing his energies on his studio work: "I feel that now I can take more chances, be even more experimental in directions and fully explore the possibilities that now seem to present themselves." In honor of his roots, Sergey plans to donate one piece from the "Time Structures" series to the State Museum of Uzbekistan. Sergey Jivetin was also the recipient of the prestigious New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Craft, recently in May 2005. First established in 1985, the bi-annual award was given to Sergey for his creations in the multi disciplinary jewelry competition. This is the first American award ever received by Jivetin.
